How They Met
Katie and Drew met in May 2015 while they both were coaching high school cross-country and track and field. During a triathlon volunteering event, they were assigned the same station. Katie explains, “We sat on the side of the road for four hours working as course marshals.” They hit it off immediately and decided to go on a date about a week later. “True to form, we went on a run at Deep Run Park, then enjoyed an amazing breakfast afterward.”

The Proposal
Drew proposed in September of 2016 while the couple was in Washington D.C. celebrating Katie’s birthday. Since it was a beautiful fall day, the two spent the morning touring the monuments and eventually Drew suggested they take a picture in front of the Reflecting Pool. “We posed for the picture and much to my surprise, Drew got down on one knee and proposed!” Katie, who immediately started crying, said yes and they spent the rest of the day celebrating with family and friends.

The Details
Since it was important to them to get married in a Catholic church, they settled on The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, a favorite of Katie’s, as she walked by it every day as a VCU student. Katie excitedly walked down the aisle to Drew, her favorite part of the day.

“We are both from Richmond and we absolutely love this city so we wanted to go with a classic Richmond theme, and there is no place more classic than The Jefferson Hotel.”

They kept their wedding d.cor elegant, with a romantic touch that complimented both of the gorgeous venues. For their colors, they went with cornflower blue, light pink, and gray/silver details, the perfect color combination for a June wedding. Their flowers were stunning, combining hydrangeas, roses, and other various flowers to tie in their theme.

“Most of all, we wanted our guests to have a great time.” Their band exceeded their expectations and kept the dance floor packed all night long.

Biggest Challenge
“To be honest, we had no major challenges. We had a long engagement (21 months) which allowed us to take our time planning!”

Best Piece of Advice
Katie and Drew’s advice to future couples is to relax and enjoy the moment. “Not everything will go perfectly, and that’s okay! Just enjoy the celebration, the time with your new spouse, and make the most of it!”
