How They Met
Colin and Emily met in Farmville in 2009 on Emily’s first night out as a 21-year-old. They met at a local Longwood favorite, Mulligan’s, where the two felt something immediately. Emily explains, “After we met we always asked about each other to our friends and looked for any excuse to spend time together.” It was only a matter of time before they made it Facebook official.

The Proposal
Colin asked Emily to be his wife one morning in 2017. Colin explains, “I wanted to surprise Emily with the engagement, but after eight years together, that was a difficult task.” He woke up early to cook one of their favorite meals, Chilaquiles, and surprise Emily with breakfast in bed. “With the ring box resting right next to the meal, I got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage. After a brief moment of shock and confusion, she said yes, making me the luckiest man in the world!”

The Details
The happy couple says choosing Linden Row Inn was one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. Emily elaborates, “[We] love everything that Richmond has to offer and it was important to share this wonderful city with our guests while also spending quality time together.”

Emily knew right away that she wanted balloons on her big day and from there a loose theme of bubbles, circles, and dots came to life. “My dress had swiss dots, we had round vases, and polka dots on our napkins and runners.” This subtle theme allowed them to showcase the natural beauty of their venue. Together with their floral arrangements, crafted by Emily’s family, they incorporated gold and rose gold to give their eclectic look a touch of elegance.

The two wanted to represent their love and relationship, without falling into the generic or traditional trapping of weddings. “Our decisions were made by asking, ‘is this fun and functional?’ or ‘is this us?'” The two used balloons to give their wedding day a fun factor. “They are a relatively cost-effective decoration that takes up a good amount of space and is always a hit with kids!”

They said their touching personalized vows underneath the romantic bistro lighting, Emily’s favorite part of the day. Colin’s favorite part was after the celebration when they continued the party down the street at a local Richmond pub. “Our family and friends took over the spot and made it our own. Every stranger there was so happy for us!”

Biggest Challenge
“A wedding is a romantic and joyous celebration, but planning it is logistically frustrating! The reality of tough decisions, financial planning was tough.”

Best Piece of Advice
Colin and Emily have one piece of advice to future couples, “Remember that you’re on the same side! The inclusion of friends and family can distract you from this, but stay true to yourselves and keep communication clear, honest, and open.”
