Honeymoon Packing 101

By Amanda Roberts with The Vacation Chic

When packing for your honeymoon, rule number one is that less is more. But, we know that’s easier said than done. Here are some tips that will prevent you from overpacking and give you enough room for all those souvenirs on the trip home.

Plan Out Your Outfits
When packing, try to pack items that can be re-worn. Choose a neutral dark dress over a tropical trendy one that would be noticed if worn again. Layers are your friend! Scarves, tanks, sweaters, fun jewelry, and anything that can be paired and repaired to make up multiple different outfits. If you are staying seven nights, only pack seven outfits, and two or three workout outfits if you plan to hike, zip line or be active.

Don’t Overpack
Try to make a game of wearing every single item in your bag. Most resorts have laundry service, and just hanging your clothes on the balcony or patio to dry works wonders in a pinch.

Limit yourself to three pairs of shoes, two pairs of dress shoes and a pair of flip-flops. Wear your workout shoes on the plane with socks. If you don’t have TSA Pre-Check or global entry, you will have to take your shoes off to go through security, and nobody wants to walk through an airport barefoot!

Pack Reusable Bags
Line the bottom of your suitcase with a flat beach bag or tote, and a waterproof or ziplock bag to separate sunscreen. You can use this bag to keep your phone safe from sand and water once you finally hit the beach. This will also come in handy on the way home if your swimsuits are still damp. And If you have loaded up on souvenirs, you can check your bag and use your tote as a carry-on.

Keep it to JUST a Carry-On
Airlines charge hefty fees for checked baggage. However, most airlines still waive these fees for carry-on luggage. And with just a carry-on, you won’t have to wait to retrieve your luggage after your flight or run the risk of the airline losing your luggage. Check with TSA for the specific size of carry-on luggage.

Optimize Your Carry-On
We know cramming everything in a carry-on is harder than it looks; so if you’re checking a bag, choose a backpack for your carry-on. They are versatile, will fit under the seat in front of you, and can hold more than you’d expect. Pack your flip-flops in your backpack and when you land, throw them on, tying your workout shoes to the side. You should also pack snacks for the plane, earbuds, reading material, and your TSA approved liquids. This should include aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes of 3.4 ounces or less. Most hotels will provide shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. But not toothpaste. If you’re picky about your shampoo and conditioner, you should pack this in your bag, but if you’re staying at a nice resort, the products are usually pretty good. And be sure to have sunscreen on you at all times! Neutrogena makes a sunscreen stick that does not count as a liquid and doesn’t need to go in the quart size bag.

One Last Tidbit
Wear workout pants on the plane, your hat, and a scarf that can double as a blanket. Also, snap a neck pillow to your backpack. And sooner than you think you’ll be sitting pretty on a beach chair with your new spouse next to you!
