6 Questions to Ask Your Photographer

By Morgan Snyder with Nicole Adele Photography

As you plan your wedding, it’s likely you are doing a ton of research on how to make sure your day is absolutely perfect. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming, but remember, you’re not on your own! Choosing a photographer will be one of the biggest decisions when planning, but have comfort in knowing that most are experts when it comes to weddings! Because you will be communicating with them before, during, and after your wedding, it is so important to work with someone you feel comfortable with and who is willing to help make this exciting time go as smoothly as possible.

One of the best ways to evaluate if you’re choosing the best photographer is by requesting a consult. This consult can happen in person or via video chat, providing you with the perfect time to ask questions and assess their work on a level that is deeper than just pretty pictures. Here are six questions to help you get the most out of your consult:

1. What’s included in your package?
This is the time to ask ALL the logistical questions. What do you charge? How does the payment process work? When will you send a contract? Does your package include an engagement session, bridal portraits, and/or rehearsal dinner coverage? Do you offer albums and/or prints? Do you have a second shooter? Remember, the more specific the better.

2. When and how will I receive my photos?
Knowing your photographer’s timeline is really important! After your wedding day has come and gone, you will be anxiously awaiting the day you get to see all of your beautiful images. Having a set date in your mind will help make the waiting go by a little easier.

Most photographers deliver images electronically, which makes downloading, sharing, and choosing your favorites super easy. However, technology isn’t always reliable. Computers can crash, files can be lost, and tears may be shed. It may sound old-fashioned, but having all of your images backed up on a flash drive is priceless, so if you are offered this, it’s definitely a major plus! Also, be sure to ask how long you can access your photos digitally. Some websites give you lifelong access, some 10 years, and some last for just a few months. If the website your photographer uses gives you a shorter access time, that’s all the more reason to have your photos on a flash drive.

3. Do you provide a sample timeline?
Let’s face it. You’re not expected to instantly know how long it takes to photograph details, what time the sun sets, or even how having a “first look” can alter the flow of your entire day. Although wedding planners and venue coordinators are great resources in this area, it’s also important to speak with your photographer and find out how much time is suggested for given aspects of the day.

4. How do you handle family formals during the wedding day?
One big reason why your wedding is such an exciting day is that all of your family is gathered together in one place to celebrate you and your new spouse! Because of this precious time, you will most likely want photographs to remember everyone being together. But, getting your family together to take group photos is easier said than done. If there’s not a plan in place, it can end up taking much longer than needed, which will cut into your bridal party pictures and portrait time. Your photographer should have a plan to make this go as smoothly as possible, so don’t be afraid to ask!

5. What vendors do you recommend?
Your photographer is just one part of a team of people who will be working to make your dream wedding happen. If yours is experienced, he or she will likely have a list of vendors that would be great to work with. From the florist to the DJ, your photographer is the perfect person to ask for recommendations of the best vendors around!

6. What do you recommend for helping the day go as smoothly as possible?
It’s no surprise that weddings can be stressful. Rest assured, your photographer has probably seen it all and should be ready to tackle any “unexpected hiccups” that might come your way. They have learned valuable lessons to help anticipate any potentially stressful situations. This is a perfect time to ask yours to share things seen go wrong in the past and what you can do to help avoid those happening to you!
