Vendor Spotlight: Sarah Dale with Shagbark Restaurant

Meet Sarah Dale, Event Coordinator at Shagbark Restaurant. With their modern approach to up-south cuisine and their dedication to providing local farmers, fishermen, and artisans a platform, Shagbark is the perfect place for any of your wedding events. With the help of Sarah, your guests will go home full and happy!

What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?
At Shagbark, we showcase the enormous bounty of Virginia by becoming a stage for local farmers, fisherman, and artisans in the real sense of “farm to table”. The name comes from a Shagbark hickory tree that grew along the James River. Several Shagbark accents are woven throughout our restaurant design, including our show-stopping communal table. Chef and Owner Walter Bundy has been leading our award-winning team since opening in June 2016. Sommeliers Rodney Rosser and Derek Salerno curate our extensive beverage program, including innovative cocktails and our wine list of over 275 offerings.

With our modern approach to up-south cuisine, this history provides a base from which everything else in the future is possible.

What’s a weird/unusual tip you tell your couples?
Most couples come to me because they’re looking for a unique space to hold their bridal event, and I always recommend considering a rehearsal lunch instead of dinner. Not only is it something different that your guests aren’t expecting, but it’s a much more budget-friendly option.

How did you get to where you are now?
I have been working at Shagbark for quite a while now. I was fortunate enough to have graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2017, shortly after which I moved into the event coordinator role. Working for an organization whose values align so closely with my own has been such a wonderful experience (and the food is spectacular too)!

What’s something every couple should know before getting married?
I’m no expert on marriage, but I believe you should know your partner’s expectation of the future.

What’s your go-to spot to eat in RVA?
You can never go wrong with Kuba Kuba!

What do you like to do when you’re away from work?
I love to rock climb! I’ve always been a bit of a climber, and Richmond is the perfect location to nurture such a hobby.

Where is your happy place?
Anywhere I haven’t been before! Travel is my passion!

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on now?
Here at Shagbark, we are working on a partnership with Libbie Mill-Midtown for an upcoming event series called “Monday’s at Midtown,” as well as an exciting event series we call “Shagbark Sunday’s.” Keep an eye out for more information to come!
