Meet Michelle Kuzmick, Owner of Michelle Kuzmick Photography. When Michelle captures a wedding, she wants to help capture how you felt on your amazing day. Read how she got started over 10 years ago and her absolute favorite thing to put on her nachos!
Tell us a little about your company:
Up until recently I probably would have given you the standard “press release” info. However, on a challenge from a colleague to write my brand story, I looked back through the years at my favorite images and realized that MKP really isn’t about photography at all. MKP is about telling stories using images so that you can relive the emotions of a moment in time. In twenty years I don’t want a bride to look back at a posed portrait and think about how young she was, I want her to look back at an image and remember the way she FELT when she looked at her groom standing at the end of the aisle. When times get tough I want her to be able to retreat to her wedding album and relive the happiness all over again.
How did you get started in this business?
By accident! In 2000 I was taking an oil class at Michaels and had taken in some of my own images to practice on. The instructor liked them so much she asked me to shoot her wedding. That family began referring me over and over and Michelle Kuzmick Photography was born.
What’s your favorite wedding story?
I have so many it’s hard to narrow it down! The most memorable from this past wedding season was the ceremony chairs that went missing! I was starting groom’s portraits when he got a call from his future mother in law that the chairs weren’t at the wedding site! He told her very calmly that he knew they were because that’s where he left them and he was taking pictures so someone else would have to find them. I snapped the picture, because what a great memory, and ran over and let him know 150 missing chairs were kinda important and we could catch up pictures later. The chairs were eventually recovered and the wedding started a bit late but it turned out just fine!
Why do you like working with weddings?
The relationships I build with my brides. Those relationships last well beyond the wedding day and I am blessed because of it. I was invited to a gender reveal recently and when I arrived her entire family embraced me like a long-lost friend. That was such a great feeling!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced with a couple and how did you resolve it?
All difficult situations usually turn into great stories! I tell all my brides, “If anything bad happens I won’t take pictures of it and in twenty years no one will remember it anyway.” Although things may “feel” like a crisis while it’s happening the most important thing is at the end of the day the couple is married.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Hire professionals. Prioritize which vendors are most important to you and invest your money there.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
I typically book up 8-12 months out.
What inspires you the most / where do you find inspiration?
I’m a storyteller so my inspiration comes from watching how the couple interacts with each other and capturing that uniqueness.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
Drink Sangria and eat donuts – preferably on a beach.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
The first movie I can ever remember seeing in a theater was Superman. To this day I still cry when Superman’s parents send him away.
What was your first job?
I worked at a bait and tackle shop by my house. I’m terrified of crickets and blood worms. I used to let the clients scoop their own.
What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
Protein shake, an apple, and coffee. I really wanted a donut.
Nachos. What would you put on yours?
Anything is fine as long as there is sour cream. Actually, I can add sour cream to anything. I get weird looks in restaurants when I order an omelet with sour cream on the side.
What’s your go-to spot to eat in RVA?
Does Sugar Shack count?
What did you want to be when you were little?
The boss.
