Real Richmond Wedding: Kim and Troy’s Movie-Inspired Wedding

How They Met:
Kim and Troy met in 2007 while playing on their respective ultimate frisbee teams. LC Bird High School (Troy’s High School) was starting a team, so during that summer, Kim started going to practices to learn how to play – even though she attended their rival high school, Thomas Dale. As the practices went on, and Kim slowly got better, and the attraction between her and Troy bloomed. In February 2008, they went on their first date, to the movies, of course. Roll the credits, because the rest was history!

The Proposal
Troy asked Kim to be his wife on Christmas Day 2016. Kim explains, “We woke up Christmas morning and already had a full day of visiting family planned, and he asked if I wanted to open my present that was under the tree.” Sure enough, sitting there perfectly wrapped, was a beautiful ring. “It was intimate and perfect…then we were able to share the joy with all of our family!”

The Details
“Our theme was our favorite movie and tv shows.” These self-proclaimed nerds used their passions for pop culture and movies in every part of their wedding. For example, all of the floral pieces (made by Kim, her mother, and her bridesmaids) had a little LEGO figurine attached to the ribbon. Beautiful yet perfectly nerdy.

Their colors were navy and maroon, which contrasted nicely against the brick exteriors of both their ceremony and reception sites. Instead of a traditional seating chart, the guest’s escort cards were a scavenger hunt. “The guest was matched up with a character in TV or movie, then the corresponding movie was on their table.”

“I was proud of the music selection at key moments.” Kim and Troy walked into their reception to “Everything is Awesome” from the LEGO Movie and her parents walked down the aisle to the famous Friend’s theme song, “I’ll Be There For You.” The two opted out of the traditional wedding cake, instead had a heaping pile of delectable donuts. Their donut toppers were vinyl pop figurines, Kim’s was Barb from Stranger Things and Troy’s was Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Biggest Challenge
“Keeping it in budget!”
